I'm using a crossover cable between a laptop running XP
pro and another running XP Home.

The XP pro works fine. But with the XP home I can't get
anything working - i.e. I can't even get it to ping
itself. I've got the ip address set to 192.168.1.40 and
when I ping that it times out. I can see the Network's
name in My Network Places, but if I click on it I
get "Mshome is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions."

Can anyone help? Many thanks

When a computer can't ping itself, the cause is probably a
misconfigured firewall program, such as ZoneAlarm or Norton Internet
Security.

You were right - Norton was the problem. After running
the Networking Wizard in Norton Internet Security, it
works fine. Thanks very much.
