Can't open Word document

I'm using Word 2000. I've received a document for proofing that I've
been unable to open. Either zipped or regular, the error message is
the same:

The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions.
* Check the file permissions for the document or drive.
* Use the File Open dialog box to locate the document (C:\program
files\qualcomm\...\xxxx.doc)

I've followed the suggestions to no avail. Can anyone help?

That's the message you'd get if the file is corrupt or not a Word document.
