It's the only thing in Control Panel which will not open - and I need to
reactivate the password on an account.

How can I get my User Accounts link back... ?

How can I get my User Accounts link back... ?

Work-around...
Start button --> RUN --> control userpasswords2 --> OK
From there you can reset the passwords/etc.

What error do you get? Anything in your even log when you try?

How To View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

When I got to the User Accounts by your method, the 'Reset Password' button
is greyed out.Whenf I do the Ctrl-Alt-Del, as it instructs, it opens the Task
Manager - where I do not see anything to do with Passwords... :-)

I tried another suggestion to reset registry and got the following 2 notes:

RegSvr32 mshtml.dll loaded but DllRegisterServer entry point not found.
File can't be registered.

DllRegisterServer failed in themeui.dll Return code 0x80004005

I tried doing sfc /scannow, and inserting my original XP disk but that did
not repair it. Should I try it with the XP 2 disk... ?

Thanks for your help... :-)

Probably a stupid question - but you did *highlight* the user in the list
that you wish to change the password for before trying to press the "Reset
password" button - correct? (In my work-around..)

Assuming you might have looked through this thread and tried most of their
stuff?
http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t492641.html

JRosenfeld suggests a Doug Knox tool - and that is nearly never a bad bet.
=)
warwagon has an interesting method that might work for you near the end of
the thread...
If I think of anything else, I'll post back...
If you have more to add here that you have tried -- please post away!

I did highlight the user...

The warwagon stuff did not work - run could not find cd rd or start in those
commands

WHA?!

Those are basic Windows XP command line commands. CD is Change Directory
and has been around forever and in most OSes. RD is Remove Directory.
Start is newer - XP really - might have been around in 2000...

That has me a little shaken up.

Start button --> RUN --> CMD --> OK

At the command prompt, type:

ver

Press enter (copy/paste into notepad or something...)

Then type:

set >> c:\system.txt

Press enter.

In Windows Explorer, browse C:\ and open that file and copy/paste that here
along with the VER results. You can fudge the names of your users and
computer if you like - although it would really be of little use to most
people. What i am really interested in seeing is your PATH statement.

A couple of other things:

The User Accounts WILL open from the Control Panel under the other user
account on the computer - this is a limited account, so I cannot access my
profile.

The control useraccounts2 command does not give me the option to
'reactivate' my password - just reset it.

Yet another thing - I see this morning that I cannot access the Insert
Picture in my Outlook Express - can Insert File, but nothing happens when I
click on Insert Picture... :-(

Okay - sounds like you may have a corrupt user profile.

If you boot to Safe Mode and log on as "Administrator" (may have no
password...) --> Can you use the Control Panel --> User Accounts or control
userpasswords2 option there?

I was able to open User Accounts in safe mode and reactivated my password
protection... :-) Still cannot open it otherwise. Still having the no access
to insert picture problem with OE...

Any suggestions on how to repair these things... ?

Some other things:

In addition to the User Account problem and the OE problem, IE won't keep my
homepage settings - none of these things occur on the other account on this
computer, just on my account... :-)

I am running the new IE7 Ver. 7.0.5700.6 - could that be boogering things
up... ?

More than likely - running beta software is not helping matters - and it may
be waht corrupted your profile. I am pretty sure from your descriptions -
the profile (your main one) is toast. You likely should create a new user
for yourself, then go in and copy your data (documents, contacts, pictures,
etc.) from the old profile to the new one. Not the entire profile - just
the data.

I state this because you keep stating that other profiles do not have the
problems that your main profile has. To me, that just points to the obvious
conclusion of a defunt user profile. And trying to correct one of those may
never work. =(
