can't open personal folders

I have a user that can't open his personal folders, total size is 1gb. Backup file is stored on local drive. Compacted "personal folders" instead of indiv folders, think this was a mistake, because Outlook hung and wanted to reopen in "safe mode". Finally opened up and he can view his personal folders now, but I'm unfamiliar with safe mode. Any suggestions? Thanks

Safe mode prevents the loading of any add-ins, in addition to other things.
If he can see his folders in safe mode he should create a new PST and move
some of his data from the old to the new and compact the old. Outlook
should then be able to restart normally, unless some other add-in is causing
trouble.
