can't open My Documents from start menu

Suddenly I cannot open Word or HTML documents when I go into My Documents
through my start menu. I can get into My Docuements, but when I select a
document, it highlights, then the timer just hangs there. Eventually the
window and/or Task Manager tell me the program is Not Responding. I can open
text and Adobe documents, although the latter takes much much longer than
usual. Seems to be fine if I go to My Documents by opening up Word first.
Puzzling, annoying and a little worrisome - help!

I have a similar problem.

* My Documents cannot be opened from the Start Menu or desktop icon.
* No other special folders are affected (My Computer etc).
* The My Documents folder in the Explorer Places Bar works fine.
* Using TweakUI to change or reset the folder location has no effect.
* "Find Target" in the Start menu link to My Documents' property dialog
works fine.
* There is no problem accessing anything in the folder when it has been
opened.

I am running Windows XP Tablet PC edition (SP2). From searching these
forums, the problem seems to have occurred on other Windows SKUs such as
Windows ME. I have tried suggested fixes such as (1) making sure My
Computer is the first desktop icon, and (2) re-registering shdocvw, but
without any result.

Hi Mike,

Well, I've done a couple of quickie searches on other forums and found no
information, so you're still a step ahead of me. I don't really understand
any of the fixes you've unsuccesfully tried. If you're willing to give me
step-by-step details, I'm willing to try them (imagine you're explaining to
your grandmother).

The only other thread I've found here ended with "no one had found a
solution to this problem". Humph. I hate taking no for an answer. Will post
if I find anything else.

I have XP Home Edition SP2, btw.

I searched across groups using the Google Groups interface i.e.
http://groups.google.com/groups?sou...GGGL:en&q=My DOcuments menu fails&sa=N&tab=wg

Attempts:
(1) Using the WIndows XP TweakUI Powertoy (downloadable from
Microsoft.com), I expand the Desktop item in the left hand tree, and go
to the First Icon branch. There I set the first icon to be My Computer.

(2) From Start > Run, open a command console by typing Cmd <enter>
Then at the prompt, type: regsvr32 /i shdocvw <enter>
If it works a little confirmation dialog will pop up.
