Im new to computers and when i receive attachements some i can open but some
i cant. The error message i get is i must 'creat an association in the folder
optons control panel'. How do i do that? I would appreciate your help.

Brian,

It sounds like the application needed may not be installed on your computer
yet. Are the attachment's file extension .zip by any chance? A .zip file is
a compressed file that needs a utility such as WinZip to open. If the
attachment is a .zip file, go here and download & install. Then go to your
e-mail attachment and attempt to open.

By the way, to create an association to a particular application, you need
to again find out the file extension the attachment was sent in.

Using the .zip example again:

* Save the attachment named 'xxxx.zip' to your Desktop,
* Click on 'xxxx.zip', if a zip utility exists, the attachment will open. If
it doesn't, a window opens that says 'Windows cannot open this file'.
* Click the option 'Select this program from a list', click OK
* Another window opens, asking to select the program that will open
'xxxx.zip' .
* Locate a Zip utility, make sure the 'Always use the selected program to
open this kind of file' is check marked, click OK.

Go to the Start menu. Click on Control Panel. Various icons open up. Double
click on Folder Options and select the File Types tab.

The file has an unrecognised extension and the extension will identify the
application that you wish to open it with eg .doc you will generally put as
Word.

The attachment will not open because the extension is not recognised. Enter
the new extension (after the last full stop in the file-name).

Then enter the package that you want it to open it with.

Alternatively you can save the file and if you know what application eg
Publisher the file should open with go into the application eg Publisher and
attempt to open the file from within the application. (File/Open (browse for
file name).

Be aware that opening attachements causes the bulk of computer problems.
Most attachements contain viruses or other wet nasties that can ruin
everything on your computer.

Do not even ATTEMPT to open ANY attachements without first installing a
sophisticated, updated, virus and malware scanner.
