Can't open excel spreadsheets

We just got a new computer with Windows XP. I saved my
old files on a disk and can't open my Word or Excel
spreadsheets in XP. HELP!!!???
 
You need to install a Microsoft Office program before attempting
to open a Word or Excel document. Windows XP is an "Operating
System" and does not include a version of Microsoft Office. You
can purchase Microsoft Office at your favorite store that sells computer
software.

You need the programs, or newer versions of them, that created the files
installed on the new machine. They are NOT part of the XP operating system.
With the exception below, that means going out, buying, and installing them
or the Office suite.

Another option is to download the free readers for them on the Microsoft
website; but that's all you can do--read.

To open .xls / .doc files, you need Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Winword, both are included in the MS Office suite. If you just want to view the files, you can get the free Viewer application available at:
