can't open e-mail attachments

I have got an e-mail sourced from my scanner manufacturer
which contains updated driver functions for my scanner.
I need to open and install these attachments in order to
get my scanner operational.
My original installation CD is only good for win 95/98, but
I am using Win XP.
The event viewer says there is a software restriction
policy in place and event 866 occurs which prevents me
opening these attachments.
Can anyone help ??
