can't open backup file

Last week, after installing 2 critical updates, XP deteriorated and I had to
try and repair and reinstall it but these attempts failed. When I tried to
restore my system files from a backup I had created with XP's backup utility
on my non-system drive, the backup (.bkf) file wouldn't open. (The file
still shows as being 5.7GB, which is it's original size, so I'm hoping the
data is still there.) I then installed XP on the second drive and tried
opening the backup file but it still wouldn't open. How can I get at the
files in the backup file? I have lost photos, email folders and other
personal info I need to recover.

"This issue occurs because the security ID for the user has changed.
Although you use the same user name and password, your security ID
no longer matches the security ID of the owner of the folder that you
cannot open....you may no longer have permission to open the folder
after you complete the following steps:
.. Before you install Windows XP Professional,
you change the actual location, or target location, of the My Documents
folder to another volume.
..You format the primary partition.
..You install Windows XP Professional."

Resolution is in the article. Good luck.

Bee.
