Have a computer that is giving a memory access violation
and downloaded stinger and fixSwen and I cant open this
or any other program. If I open a file that was made by
one of these programs sometimes they will open, but when
I try to start the application it will not run. I tried
to do a repair from the win2000pro cd but it would not
run because the computer will not restart on it's own
either. If anyone has any ideas on any of these problems
it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Curtis,

You may be able to get it back, but you actually need an ERD and a Full Backup to restore. If
you do not, since there is no way of knowing from the information you can try repair the
Master Boot Record by booting to a command prompt and running SFC /MBR . If that gets you back
up, run an
AV scan at http://securityresponse.symantec.com/ . A free online scan is available under New
Definitions. If the scan finds infection(s), write down everything or print it. Go to Google
with the infection name(s), find the Symantec fix page and do everything it says in the order
it days to do it. If you do not, chances are it will come right back. If you do not have
infection, we can try to get your OS back by going to a command prompt and first running SFC
/SCANNOW , afterward reboot to a Safe Mode with a Command Prompt, and run CHKDSK /R/F; answer
"Y" for yes and Restart. This will take up to 40 minutes to complete. After it is through. Run
a Defrag and when through Cold Boot.

Let's see is it's back up here. If not, Restart to the BIOS and change the boot order to CD
first, save and exit. After boot up is complete, place your W2K in the tray and Restart. After
the CD boots to a Command Prompt, chose to install and select "R" for Repair. Afterward remove
the CD & Shutdown. Boot to the BIOS and reset the boot order back to whatever was first,
probably a Floppy. Restart and see if you can boot up normally. Check you Event viewer to see
if it has any Errors or Alerts. Without going into great depth, you can save them to a text
file by saving as a tab delimited file and name it something like "SOB 110203.txt" to your
desktop. Afterward, test your system to see if all is well. Depending on how good or bad the
state of the box at this point, should determine your next course of action.
