I'm trying to open a file from a floppy that a co-worker gave me but it
displays the following message:

"*.xls cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be
trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server the document is
stored on may not be responding"

I've actually had this problem before and just forgot about it because
it wasn't really an important file, this is a little different.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

thanks, Clay

Directly Saving to or Opening from a floppy is a recipe for corruption of the
file. Hopefully this has not occurred.

Copy to your Hard Drive first then try to open.

This generally indicates a corrupt file. Often Excel 2000 and Excel 2002
can open and repair corrupt files, but you usually lose all of your
formatting.

Excel files should not be opened directly from floppies. They tend to get
corrupted. Always copy them to the hard drive or and open them from there.

Clay,

I had a similar problem with a spreadsheet file stored on my local
harddisk. When attempting to open using Excel 2000 I received the
following error:

"*.xls cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be
trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server the document is
stored on may not be responding"

After searching the web for a number of hours, the only "free" solution
I found was to install openoffice (http://www.openoffice.org/). This
opened the file successfully and when re-saved could be opened again in
Excel.

Hope this helps.
