Can't network XP and 2000 at home.

I have added an XP SP2 computer to my home network of two 2000 machines. The
only way I can browse to the other computers on the newtwork is by using
"Search for Computers" and keying in the IP address of the computer I am
looking for. I am then able to mount network drives and shares and copy the
files I needed. Searching on the computer name always fails. The others on
the network never show up in My Network Places on the XP machine, nor does
the XP machine show up in the others Newtork Places. I am able to ping
successfully among the machines and firewalls have been either disabled or
given a range of IPs to accept. I have installed NETBEUI on the XP machine
and have been using it on the 2000 machines. Using the IP as the computer
browsing name is problematic because the IP keeps changing and is unreliable
as a computer name.

Jim,

Did you install NetBEUI as a (successful?) resolution for your various
complaints:
# Searching on the computer name always fails.
# The others on the network never show up in My Network Places on the XP
machine.
# Nor does the XP machine show up in the others Newtork Places.
or did you observe those symptoms after installing NetBEUI?

I agree with you, using an IP address to reference computers when DHCP is in use
is frustrating. You need name resolution. As I prefer to talk to you as "Jim",
not "(e-mail address removed)".

Let's look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, so we
can diagnose the problem (if there is one). Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:

Chuck,
NETBEUI installation did not resolve my problems assuming it is installed

Chuck,

properly. It appears in my network config dialog as a protocol on all

Jim,

Well, I see a few things to change.

First, understand the limitations of NetBEUI.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/windows-networking-and-alternate.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/windows-networking-and-alternate.html

Your first problem is JimMaine.
Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : JimMaine
Primary DNS Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Peer-Peer
If you don't have a WINS server, "Peer-Peer" won't work at all.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html#Peer-Peer

Next, Dell5150 is using NetBIOS Over TCP ("\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_") for browsing.

And you have a segmented LAN. DELL5150 is in one segment, and JimMaine and
KatzMeow are in the other.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/08/browsing-across-subnets.html

Also, both JimMaine and KatzMeow are using multiple transports. With KatzMeow
using Node Type = Hybrid, you will have latency in resolving computer names,
which translates into slow browsing, and slow access to shared data. With the
multiple transports on both computers, and NetBEUI, any broadcasts (such as
server advertisements, which are essential to My Network Places) will be
unpredictable. If you end up with a segmented LAN, due to unpredictable browser
advertisements, My Network Places will continue to be unpredictable.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/windows-networking.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/windows-networking.html

I suspect that, if you fix Dell5150 and JimMaine, per the cited articles, your
primary symptoms will go away. But you'll still have latency issues, with
multiple transports.

For a 3 computer LAN with Windows 2000 and XP, using NBT makes sense. NBT is
the supported solution, and is better understood. And, if you don't use NBT,
"ipconfig /all" isn't totally relevant. You are behind a NAT router
("192.168.1.1"), right? If so, NBT is perfectly safe (though personal firewalls
on each computer would be good). Please read my articles, and let me know how
you wish to proceed.

Chuck,

I have made the registry key changes on Dell5150 and Jimmaine. The purpose
of adding Dell5150 to the network is to decommission Katzmeow. So I am
making changes only to those two machines for now. Using the IP address I
did connect to Katzmeow to copy the files off of it to Dell5150. But it is
essential that it play well with Jimmaine as we go forward.

On the ipconfig of Jimmaine the Node Type is now "Broadcast". On Dell5150
the Node Type is now "unknown".

I still cannot see either computer from the other.

Would I be better off to reconfigure the network using TCP\IP? If so, how
would I do that because I am only familiar with setting up networks using
NETBEUI? You are correct that I am using a wireless router as my hub with a
link to a cable modem for internet access.

Regards,
Jim.

Jim,

You would be better off reconfiguring with TCP/IP, but you will have to do that
to Katzmeow too.

With Windows XP it's simple. Un install NetBEUI, from Local Area Connections
Properties. Then run the Network Setup Wizard, and select (in your case):
This computer connects to the Internet through another computer on my network or
through a residential gateway.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-network-setup-wizard-in-windows.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-network-setup-wizard-in-windows.html

The Network Setup Wizard installs and configures computers using TCP/IP.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-network-setup-wizard-in-windows.html#Actions>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-network-setup-wizard-in-windows.html#Actions

Broadcast is a good setting for your LAN. But until Dell5150, Jimmaine, and
Katzmeow all use the same transport for browsing, file sharing, and name
resolution, you'll have trouble.

You have 2 choices:
# Install NetBEUI on Dell5150, which is a manual process, and will not serve you
well in the long run.
# Uninstall NetBEUI then install TCP/IP on Katzmeow (is that the Win2K system?),
which may be a manual process. Uninstall NetBEUI from Jimmaine, then run the
NSW.

The second choice is probably a bit more work, but it's better for you in the
long run. That's my professional opinion anyway. It's your network, and I'll
help you as best I can.

Chuck,

I run into a brick wall every time I run Network Setup Wizard. It works
fine on the XP machine, but then it says to make a disk to run on my other
computers. But the setup wizard does not work on W2k computers. It only
works on 98, ME and XP home. So what do I with the W2k machines to set them
up for TCP\IP ?

Regards,
Jim.
