I have a new desktop and want to connect it to my laptop
to transfer the files. The laptop seems to configure for
networking ok, but when I got hru the steps on the
desktop it doesn't recognize itself as being a
shared/networked computer. I am connecting them with a
ethernet cable. I'm correct in thinking that I shouldn't
need any other hardware to connect them, right? They are
both running XP. Any suggestions?

You need a cross over cable if you are connecting the two computers
directly to each other without a switch or hub.

a cross over cable switches the send and the recieve
wires in the cables. cross over cables are about the
same price as regular cables and can be bought just about
everywhere regular cables can be purchased.
