As far as I understand you can not upgrade win ME to windows 2000. They are two seperate platforms. ME runs on win98, win2000 runs off of NT4.0. You will have to do a fresh install of win 2000, just back up all the files you want to keep. You will loose any programs you dont have disks for.

IM RUNNING WIN ME BUT IT WILL NOT ALLOW ME TO UPGRADE TO WIN2000
Since Windows ME was released after Windows 2000, ME to 2000 it is not
supported as an upgrade path. If you want/need to run Windows 2000 on this
computer, you will need to clean install or install in a dual boot
configuration. Knowledge Base article 289283 Description of Supported
Dual-Boot Configurations Between Windows 2000 http://support.microsoft.com/?id=289283 for some suggestions in dual booting
your computer.
