Sometimes, after connecting to the Internet using dial-up
(in XP's own network folder-no Trumpet Winsock or other
third party program), I can't open the MSN Messenger, the
MSN Explorer, the Yahoo! Messenger, or any other program,
whether in the HDD, the Start menu, or even the system
tray (toolbar next to the clock). I have tried exiting
the several programs I have on the system tray, but the
problem persists even after I do that. Often the Dial-Up
doesn't disconnect and close after I tell it do so, and I
go on unable to load any program. More than once I have
been forced to reset the computer, since the only way to
get the Dial-Up out of the way is to 'Log Off' or
restart, and even when I choose this through the Start
bar, the system doesn't do anything; the screen just
turns monocromatic, but doesn't proceed with the logging
off or restart process.
I have an AMD Duron 850Mhz processor, running on a MSI MS-
6380 LE mo'board (VIA VT8366 chipset), with 512 Mb of DDR
(200Mhz) RAM; a PC-Tel HSP 56 PCI Softmodem (with PC-
Tel's own latest drivers-MS's certified ones were
problematic), and an nVidia GeForce 2 200Mhz video card
with 64Mb of built-in DIMM RAM, plus a 20Gb. uDMA Maxtor
HDD and a Samnsung 52x CD-ROM.
