Can any1 help? i've tried to install xp a couple of times but most of the
time the computer crashes immediately after the "Copying installation files"
phase and one time i got an error message that said something like "Cannot
read or write to drive c".
Does any1 know what the problem might be? Thanks in advance for any help,

What steps do you take to install WinXP? Please be specific!

Just loaded the cd, selected install. i was informed of a few applications
that may not work with xp - nothin too serious i don't think. The 'Preparing
for installation' phase then completed and this is where the problem always
is - the actual installation never begins. is there anything else you need to
know that could help you to help me? Sorry if i'm being vague - this is all
that i have done - i just assumed the installation would be automatic.

What applications?
Uninstall them.
If you have antivirus, uninstall, not just disable, it as well.
Disconnect ALL peripherals such as camera, printer, scanner etc.

It seems you're doing an upgrade rather than a fresh installation.
In view of your problems I suggest this:
- Back up all your important files.
- Boot the machine with your WinXP CD.
- Allow the hard disk to be formatted when prompted.
