I just built a similar P4, Try starting with your bios,
and make sure you have your motherboard integrated
video/lan etc, shut off if you have the components, if
you don't shut them off in the bios, the processor tries
to use both and it won't load, if that's not it, try
starting with base system, and integrated video, sound
etc, and replace them via "plug and play", one at at
time.
I lose my RESTORE files every couple of days, have you
heard of THAT?

Well, tried diabling extra "frilly" stuff, but still cannot install windows.
I get to the install, but as the initial files are being loaded, the system
just hangs on a random file, requiring a reboot. This happens every time.
Any other help?

OK, tried something else, and got an interesting reaction.

I took the hard drive out of my working computer (this one) and connected it
to the new system. When it was ready to show the windows splash screen, i
saw a bsod flicker and the system restarted itself. Does this mean
anything?

Hi Mike,

I don't see the original post anymore, but this sort of caught my attention:

I have no experience with RAID, but I recently installed 2K on a system
using
an IDE controller card. I needed to install the related drivers
during the setup, otherwise the drive connected to that controller is not
recognized. With 2K it's "hit F6" pretty much at the beginning of the setup,
if I remember right. The setup routine prompts for it at the bottom of the
screen (It asks, if you need to install third party ....). Proceeding, you
can install the drivers from a floppy (setup will prompt for it), before
setup continues loading files.

Here's some more info...

HD is plugged in to IDE 1 (which is a different color from the other IDE
plugs...)
Cable is plugged in the right way and in the end of the cable, not the
middle
All RAID and other frilly stuff is disabled in BIOS
HD is detected in BIOS correctly as primary master
All stuff that I'm not sure of is set to "AUTO"
There is a setting, "Onboard H/W Serial ATA" which can be set to RAID or
BASE. I have tried RAID, BASE, and DISABLED

All settings allow me to get to Windows Setup from the CD, but it's at that
point that weird things happen:

Sometimes the install just freezes as the initial files are being loaded,
reboot necessary <---- most often
Sometimes I get to the "Starting Windows" dialog, just in time to get the
blue screen
Sometimes I get to the same point, but the system just restarts on its own

I really don't know what else to try. I have never had this much trouble
with a system before and am getting very frustrated :( The only consolation
is that my hard drive and CD drive are detected correctly, and always have
been. At least that's something to work on...

Any more suggestions?

Hi Mike,

Have you tried to use the install CD in another computer? Could happen, that
the CD got corrupted. Have you tried to install another OS?

Have you tried to use the drive in another computer, to use another drive in
this computer, other cables ...? I realize all is new, but you never know.

Did you call the retailer, who sold you the system, to ask, if any third
party drivers have to be installed with an OS install?

You said, you bought this as a new system from a retailer. Do I understand
it right, that they never installed an OS, just assembled it? Or do you
know, that a test install in their shop worked?

If it was not too much trouble, I would visit them with your new machine and
your install CD and see if they can help. After all there might be some kind
of hardware issue?

Good Luck!
