I'm getting lots of hangs (and it seems to be increasing)
under IE6 whre I have to go to task manager and literally
shut it down that way to be able to do anything on the
computer. I read troubleshooting and it suggested I
download and install Q818506.exe.
I downloaded it, abut every time I try to start it (I also
tried to tun it by saying "open" on the download and saw
the same thing) I get a message that I must have IE6 with
SP1 installed.

I DO have IE6 with SP1 installed. What gives?

I'm running Windows XP Professional with all the service
packs and updates applied. (I also thought I had all the
IE updates applied, too...)

Help?

That probably means you have it already.
Copy/paste the following line into your browser
javascript:navigator.appMinorVersion

Here's what it says

;SP1;Q832894;Q831167

(as an aside, it appears that I'm running the SUN Java VM (I have the steaming coffe cup in the system tray right now); I have no mention of a Java VM in my internet options

Thanks in advance

Yep, you already have it since 832894 is a cumulative update.
