I'm running a dual-boot (98 & XP) worked OK for 3 months. Today my only
printer (Lexmark, parallel port) disappeared in Device Manager, and doesn't
show in Printers in Control Panel. Printer still works OK in W98.

Unfortunately I wiped out my XP Restore points yesterday. When I click Add
Printer in Control Panel, I get message "Operation Could Not Be Completed",
so I can't reinstall printer. My printer still shows in Programs Menu, but
error msg says no printer installed.

I don't know where to go next, other than reinstalling XP. Anybody seen this
before, or have any ideas?

I would diconnect the printer,start xp a time ot 2,then shutdown,re-connec
the printer,on desktop you should get," found new hardware" then load the drivers
software.

I'd already tried that. During further research, I found a MS KB article
specifically about Lexmark printers, and how the Lexmark driver can cause
the spooler to hang, and then no printers show up, and no printers can be
installed. I followed the instructions and fixed the problem. Why it
happened after three months I have no idea. Thanks for your help Andrew.

I had exactly the same problem the other day. I went to print something and all the printers I had were no longer installed (and there were quite a few). Im currently using a lexmark X1150 so Im guessing thats the source of the trouble. I also get the "operation could not be completed" message if i click the add printer button. I'll try and find that article on the problem you mentioned. If you want to post it, or a link, here that would be helpful. If I find it, ill post it instead.
