I made a copy of my XP PRO CD, and when I tried to use it to intall XP, it
wasn't detected by the computer...
I have
-set the cd rom as the first, then only boot device = nogo
-made sure the disk worked, i.e. when I'm in windows, I put the disk in and
it automatically starts up
-checked the original disk to see if it was automatically detected, and it
was

The problem with the original, in case you were wondering, is a huge scratch
across half the cd. It will start, but not fully install due to the physical
damage.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I copied my XP Home CD and use the copy exclusively. How did you copy
the original? Maybe you used a method that didn't copy all of the files;
or the copy process might have hiccupped; or maybe the CD is defective
in some way. Could be many things.

I'd just try copying again by imaging the original CD to hard disk, then
copying the image to a new CD. And if that's what I'd done the first
time, and I got the same result twice, even with a new CD, then I'd try
different software for the copy process. There's a whole host of imaging
sftw from Nero to Ghost to a zillion others. Many are free to try.

And btw, if you have the space to simply copy the original to your hard
disk (not an image file, but an actual copy) you can always install from
that.

Good luck.

If you simply copy the CD, you don't make it bootable. You have to use
the bootable option in Roxio/Nero or go through a special manual process
to extract a file from the original CD and copy it to the new CD. Bart
has a lot of useful information on bootable CDs at
http://www.nu2.nu/bootablecd/

You should be able to use Bart's advice on that page to take the
contents of your non-bootable CD and combine it with the bootable files
to make a new copy that IS bootable.
