I'm running XP and having trouble inserting mpeg movies
into ppt. I get the message, "Powerpoint couldn't insert
a movie from the selected file. Either the file is non-
standard or Quicktime is not installed properly." I think
the problem started when I upgraded to windows media
player 9.0 but I'm not sure. Any help will be appreciated.

You can test whether the Mpeg movie codec is compatible with PowerPoint by
the following steps:
1.Click Start, and then click Run.
2.In the Open box, type mplay32.exe
3.Click OK to start Media Player.
4.On the File menu, click Open.
5.Select the Mpeg movie that you want to verify, and then click Open.

Note that the MCI Media Player Mplay32.exe is not the same program as the
Windows Media Player.

Where did you get the video? My best guess is that it is not a standard
mpeg file and does not follow the Redbook standard.

I'm having exactly the same problem - mpeg files I've inserted before and still play fine in other PPT files will no longer insert into new presentations. I have also recently installed windows media player 9. Have checked MCI extensions, drivers and reinstalled PPT XP. Nothing's worked. Microsoft recommended installing logos.com LSX MPEG 4.0 Player. That doesn't work either. Hope somebody figures this out soon.

Microsoft recommended I do the steps below and it fixed the problem for me. Maybe, it'll work for you
1. Perform a search on your computer for "mc*.ax" (no
quotations). If you find such a file, do the following steps
2. Quit all programs but leave the search window open
3. Click Start, and then click Run
4. Type the following commands: regsvr32 /u "[path to file and file
name]". If you have left the search window open you can merely drop the
file into the box and path and file name will appear
5. If the command is successful you will receive a message saying it
was successful
5. Click OK
6. Restart the computer and try inserting the movie file in powerpoint
