Can't go into Standby Mode

1. I found out one day the Standby button was greyed off. I didn't know how long this has happened since I don't use standby mode frequently. Anybody has any idea why
2. I'm not sure if this is related to the first problem but there is no sound from the speakers. I have check the sound card and the speakers they are all fine. What could be the reason?
 
I have the same problem. I posted this question in XP General also. I got no answer.
