Can't get XP Home to run a check disk

I follow the instructions for setting a Check Disk at the
next boot-up, but when I restart the system it goes into
a normal boot-up without running the utilit
 
Do you have ZoneAlarm installed and did you recently upgrade it to
version 5.0? It has been reported that ZoneAlarm 5.0 may be the root cause
of your problem.

Go to Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter. Then type in:
chkntfs /x c: , and hit enter. Reboot your computer.

[This disables CHKDSK from running on drive C:]

Why not just double click 'my computer' right click on the hard drive, select
properties---tools and run it there?
