trying to do a windows xp pro update, am told I have to
sign on as administrator. I don't know the administrator
password (and never did know it) and can't proceed without
it. Can anyone help?

There is no way around this, either your account must have administrator
privelages or an account with administrator privelages must install updates
to the operating system.

You can change any account password on your system without actually
knowing the password.

Open CMD.exe...

type in " net user Administrator <your password here>

simple as that

Go to Control Panel, User Accounts. Is your account an Administrator level account? If so, this problem is caused by one of two Registry entries.
