Can't get SP1 to load

I have tried for over a year now (off and on) to update my WinXP Pro with SP1 and it has consistantly failed to load everytime. It downloads fine, but when installing, it gets all the way to the end of the line (fills the area totally with blue bars) then it stops there and never goes any further. (This process takes about 2 hours each time)

I'm at my wits end, I've even tried the "Repair WinXP Pro" option from my CD ... no help

Norton System works tells me there is nothing wrong with my Windows system - I turn off all programs when trying (like Antivirus and firewall from Norton) ... still no success
