Can't Get Rid of Internet Updating

I've got an IBM Thinkpad with a clean install of 2000 Pro
and Service Packs 1 thru 4.

After being on the internet for a few minutes, and not
surfing, it appears that Windows is doing something like
auotupdates, but I supposedly have the auto-update feature
turned off. It also drags my internet surfing speeds down
when it starts up. The two computers in the bottom right
corner are constantly "on" or talking with one another
even though I'm not surfing.

Anyone experienced with this?

Thanks
Dan

The autoupdate requires 2 services to be "disabled." Manual will not cut it. First go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | dbl-click Automatic Updates | uncheck Keep my computer up to date blah blah blah...

Then in Admintrative Tools | dbl-click Services | set to disabled:

Automatic Updates
Background Intelligence Transfer

by dbl-clicking these and set the startup to "disabled."

Make sure you record what these services were at for startup before you do this.

Automatic updates should have startup set to automatic
Backgrounf Intelligence Transfer startup set to Manual.
