Terry,
There is another possibility which my utility does not address (will be
added in the next update). Try this:
Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe
Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Applications\Virtualdub.exe
Export the key to a REG file.
Delete the "Virtualdub.exe" branch.
Close Regedit.exe

Terry,
Use the following program and add VirtualDub to the Open with list.
Registering a program with the "Open With" dialog:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/openwithadd.htm
That looked exactly what I needed Ramesh, thank you, but unfortunately
I can't get it to work. I tried it not only with VirtualDub but also
another program. I'm not sure I'm using it correctly though.
First, there seems to be no relationship to the *file type* I am
trying to associate, namely AVI? Or should I do something I've missed,
before using the program?
Also, perhaps I should add something in the Command line box, which I
have so far left blank?
And is there supposed to be some indication when the task is
completed? I just get the 'Add to Open With' greyed out, and
eventually I close the program.
I did also make a start studying your very interesting pages. At
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.avi\OpenWithList
I found there *was* an entry for VirtualDub.exe. But this must be the
earlier version. I recently updated and so I want the Open With to
open the new version. So I renamed the Program Files folder. Now I
have two folders:
'VirtualDub-1.6.10 NOT USED'
'VirtualDub-1.6.14'
That apparently succeeded in preventing VirtualDub (1.6.10) appearing
on the Open With list for AVI files. So then I assumed I could simply
add the new one via the Open With|Browse route. After failing, I
posted above.
Anyway, I tried deleting that VirtualDub.exe entry (I couldn't find
any anywhere else you suggest) and repeated running your program. But
still no joy.
Best wishes,
