I upgraded from ME to XP Home a few months ago. I
decided to reinstall XP today due to a problem. It hangs
at 34 minutes (I've read the fixes). Trouble is, I can't
get out of setup. I've turned off the computer,
unplugged it, and when I turn it back on it's still in
setup. I can't get to anything else - setup won't let me
out. Help!!

Someone posted here how to get of the setup loop: hit Shift +F8 during setup
or restart.

If you got a full XP install cd, do the following:

When your pc boots up, you should press [DEL] until you get into BIOS. Go to
advanced bios options, and where it says 'primary boot device' you enter
'CD-ROM'. This will let you boot from the CD directly, without going to the
part that's already on hard disk (this is the part that triggers the resume
of setup).

When you're in the XP Setup menu, you -delete all partitions- (or, at least
the first one) on your primary hard disk (this will give you a clean
install, in stead of an upgrade!). You will lose all saved data on the C
drive (it's lost anyway - or you have to be able to attach the hard drive to
a working computer?).

Then, select the free space, select 'install Win' - when it promts you for
the file system choice, you select NTFS (if you don't have to attach the
disk to a win98 pc - and not the 'fast' option).

Now Win XP schould do a fresh, complete install.

You are going to nee the drivers for your mainboard, video card, sound card
and perhaps other devices in your computer - these have to be installed
right after installation of XP.

If you need some extra assistance, drop me a line at
(e-mail address removed) (without the NOSPM).

If you're going to try the install again - good luck!

Glenn.
