Hi,
As part of a housekeeping exercise, I have tried to download updates
for the drivers from several manufactures e.g. NVIDIA, Epson.
However, although the webpages from both couldn't be simpler, when I
press the button to start the DOWNLOAD, absolutely nothing happens.
Note that I have no difficulty in downloading from other sources and my
computer is, or at least seems to be, running well.
Can anybody suggest what might be the problem here?
Thanks

Do you have popups disabled? Are you scrolling down far enough? I don't
know about Epson, but with Nvidia downloads you must accept their EULA
before the download will commence. The EULA pops up in a separate
window.

If the system is running well then don't update the drivers. As a
general rule only update drivers if there is a problem and you know the
new driver is intended to fix that problem, or because there is a new
feature you must have. Don't do it just to have the most recent driver
if the system is otherwise running well.

I don't know what your problem is, but it could be a blessing in disguise.
If your system is running well, I wouldn't attempt to update any drivers.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is usually a good maxim to follow.

What is NOT working on your pc that you need a driver update to fix?

Rock nailed it on the head! If your machine is working fine then there is no
need to update it. Not all updates work as people would like.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Thank you all for your replies and advice. It does seem that a certain
unanimity is creeping into this thread suggesting that I should leave
well enough alone.
Yes, my computer certainly is not 'broke' but that doesn't mean it
can't be made to perform better. Indeed, another MS-MVP (Shenan
Stanley) recently advised updating of component drivers as part of a
regular housekeeping program and added that 'Updated drivers are
usually more stable and may provide extra benefits/features that you
really wished you had before'.
However, this is a matter of personal philosophy and gets away from my
current problem in that the 'download' buttons on the webpages of at
least two component suppliers don't work on my (supposedly unbroken)
computer. Is the problem likely to arise from a difficulty on the
particular webpages or am I trying to download from too far away (I'm
in Europe) or do I have a Javascript problem?
Any opinions would be gratefully received.
Thanks

I asked you if you have a popup blocker in force because Nvidia's site
pops up a window that requires you to accept the EULA. Do you?

Sorry for neglecting to reply to your suggestions.
Yes I do have a pop-up blocker but when I checked after using the
NVIDIA site, no pop-up had been blocked.
I tried again with the pop-up blocker switched off with the same
result.
Furthermore, on the site I used (www.nvidia.co.uk), I could find no
reference whatsoever to a need to sign a EULA.
Indeed, were this the problem I would be surprised if an apropriate
error message did not appear.

Some updated video drivers break previously working features OR reduce
the capability of one feature to allow another to work. So remember
"newer isn't necessarily better" and "if it breaks you own both pieces".

Once again, thanks to everybody for suggesting I steer away from
installation of new drivers when I apparently don't need them. I have
taken this advice on board.
Nevertheless, I am still left with the original problem as to why the
'download' buttons don't work.
I have done a little investigation and find that whenever a button or a
link shows (on placing the mouse pointer on the link) an indication of
JAVASCRIPT on the Windows task bar, then the link will not function.
When the link/button shows no reference to JAVASCRIPT in the taskbar,
then it works fine.
The universality of this discrepancy on my computer suggests that this
Javascript connection is somehow preventing the link from performing
its expected function.
Unfortunately, I am insufficiently conversant in these matters to take
the diagnosis any further.
Can anybody help me out?
Thanks

I can't help but it must explain why I can't log onto Gigabyte Update Centre
to update motherboard drivers.

I've just found out that ICH5 update from intel is now for ICH5-r only and
the advice from Intel is to use Windows Native drivers on my model of board
(865PE chipset)
