hi there,

I just installed XP and now I can't get internet. I got cable and my other
computer does work via the same connection. (surf board).
Do I need some extra kind of modem to connect? (all wizards etc. don't work,
also I can't free any bip address)

After switching the cable modem from one computer to the other, reset
the cable modem by disconnecting its electrical power for a few
seconds and then reconnecting it.

When you connect a computer directly to the cable modem, make sure
that a firewall is protecting the computer from access by other
Internet users. If you don't have third-party firewall program
(Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm, etc), enable the Windows Firewall and
don't allow any exceptions.

After you installed XP, did you also install all your drivers for the
motherboard, network adapter, etc.? If not, you need to.

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the
drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor. The older Aida32 is good for this, too.

Thanks! Downloaded Belarc Advisor and it detected (among other things):

Network drives: None detected

Communications: Sonic Blue SUP2380 DATA Fax Modem
1394 network card
Eicon DIVA 2.01 S/T (ISAPNP)

I bought the computer from someone who surfed on it (maybe via ISDN?). Where
can I find the drivers? (It's a Compaq Presario Pentium III). Don't know
about the motherboard etc.

apparently my computer just needs a network-card for LAN as I could only find
a modem for telephone (ISDN) in it.

thanks anyway

grtz,
