Can't get disk defragmenter to work

Tonight i tried to get the disk defragmenter to work and at about 80% of analyzing it, it stops and a error msg. comes up that some program is stopping the disk defragmenter and disk defragmenter is shutting down. This has never happened before. Also if i look into my maintance schedule, i can see that all the scheduled maintance performances could not start.Anybody have any answers?
 
Without knowing the exact wording of your error message, we can't provide
specific advice. In general, no other programs ahould be running when
defragmenting. Anything that writes to the disk will cause the defragmenter
to stop. It's like you're trying to organize the books in your library when
someone comes and adds a new book.
