I replaced some RAM into my computer and now I can't
start my computer. I get an error stating that a file is
missing or corrupt and it gives:

\windows\systesm32\config

Not sure what I can do, each time I hit 'r' to fix the
problem it don't work. I hit F8 and go into Safe Mode
and I keep getting the error message. Please help. My
wife has all her school work on there and need all that
info back. Thanks.

Sounds like you selected the wrong type of RAM or there is a
bad stick. Check that you have matching and the correct
type of RAM. You can't mix different types, such as ECC or
non-ECC. Some mobo have slots for different types of RAM,
but you can only use one type at a time.

But then I put the orginal RAM back in and still get the
error. How do I get that from registring that other RAM?

I figure it has to do with that other RAM but with it not
being in there, not sure how to get the computer back and
running.

Press F8, then select "Last Known Good Configuration".

Getting your wife's files off your PC won't be difficult.
At the same time you might consider the iron law of
computing: All important files must be backed up to
an independent medium on a weekly basis. Many people
choose to ignore this law until they suffer a major
disaster.

I got here because I have an identical problem to what
Jason Melrose describes. No RAM has bene changed, nothing
was touched in a near new Copaq computer. Just from one
minute to the next. Cannot even get into Safe Mode by
pressing F8.
Currently ready to redo the whole thing, attached as a
slave now in the hope there would be a fix available.
Alas, most of the suggestions in the newsgroups are of no
help.
Jason before you re-do your system, get the harddisk as a
slave and retrieve all the data and other things you
still need.

All this is enough agony, to lose stuff, is a disaster,
Backing up is good advice, but we all have only 24 hours,
and constantly backing up leaves no time to do the work
to be backed up.

Amen.

You write "constantly backing up leaves no time to do the
work to be backed up". You sound like the taxi driver
who said if he maintained his taxi the way he should then
he would have no time to drive it. As I said, it's your
decision not to back up, and you have to wear the
consequences. You wrote yourself "to lose stuff, is a
disaster". I fully agree, but I do something about it. My
backup process is mostly automated and it is extremely
effective!

There are several ways out of your dilemma. Some
have certain risks when used by the inexperienced;
hence the need for a recent backup. Here are a few:

- Boot the machine with your WinXP CD, then perform
a repair installation.
- Boot the machine with your WinXP CD, then perform
a parallel installation of WinXP.
- Temporarily install the disk as a slave disk in some
other Win2000/XP PC, then save the data files to
that PC.
- Boot the machine with a Bart PE CD
(www.bootdisk.com), then save the files to a
networked PC.
- Boot the machine into the Recovery Console, then
replace the System registry file with its most recent
backup (which Windows makes automatically).

Is this enough for starters?
