Can't get at Contacts

Due to a hardware problem I have reloaded windows XP and office XP. After
installing Office XP inculding Outlook I copied over my backup .pst file. Now
I can see my Contacts folder but cannot use it in E-Mail: message "The
Address list could not be displayed. The contacts folder associated with his
list could not be opened: it may have been moved, deleted or you do not have
permissions. For information on how to remove this folder from the Outlook
Address Book see help."
This is mysterious as I can see the contacts, add new ones, delete etc.
I have had problems in the past using .pst copies: it does not seem to be
enough just to copy a .pst file back in.
Thanks for any help!

Never overwrite a PST file. You corrupt your profile.
If the address book is the only thing broken, you may be able to fix it
just be re-enabling your Contacts Folder as an email address book in its
properties. If more things are broken, you'll need to create a new profile.

How does one backup and restore a .pst file?
Cannot find any property to re-enable Contacts Folder as an Address Book.
How would I create a new profile? And if I do can I import my e-mail
messages from the old .pst?
I have all of my Contacts backed up in an Access database so I could
re-create from that.

Sounds like the contact-type folder you want is not the one selected
when you open the Address Book. Open the Address Book. What do you see
in the "Show Names from the:" drop-down listbox? If it is "Outlook
Address Book" then you won't see any contact listed in any contact-type
folder in Outlook. That item is a container for the contact-type
folders but is not itself a contact-type folder (i.e., it is the file
cabinet holding the folders, and what you want is a folder).

When you use that drop-down listbox to select your contact-type folder
(i.e., "Contacts"), do your contacts show up? If you see your
contact-folder listed but it is not the one selected when you open the
Address Book, use its Tools -> Options to select which contact-folder to
select by default.

If a contact-type folder doesn't show up in the drop-down listbox then
maybe it isn't designated to be included. Right-click on the
contact-type folder in the tree pane (Folder List pane), select
Properties, and under the Outlook Address Bar tab make sure the option
is checked to include that contact-type folder as an address book.

Thanks for your response. The Address Book drop-down list shows nothing at all.
The Outlook Address Book property is shown as Contacts but NOT checked: both
entries are grayed out and I cannot change them.

You sure when looking at the properties of a contact-type file and
looking under the Outlook Address Book tab (for the option to include it
in the Outlook Address Book) that you are selecting a contact-type
folder that is in your message store? If you have opened a PST file
that is not designated as your message store then I suspect that you
cannot add it into your Outlook Address Book.

Go under File -> Data Management. Is your PST file the one designated
to receive incoming e-mails (i.e., is it your current message store)?

Cannot find any property to re-enable Contacts Folder as an Address
Book.

Right-click Contacts, choose Properties, then click the Outlook Address Tab.
Click the "Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book" box.
