cant find programs

i've lost my programs... when i click the start button,
there are no programs ....how do i restore the "start"
to where it was before.. i don't even have "search"
can anyone help me

You can run System File Checker tool to scan all of the

protected files on your computer:
Click Start > Run and type: CMD, and hit enter.
In the open box, type; sfc /scannow (including space) and
then click OK. Or type this in a start, run box also.
that you may be prompted to insert the Windows XP
installation CD-ROM. Then run the disk cleanup tool and
the defrager as well for maintenance.
