Can't Find My CD Rom drive

For a while, after installing XP when I try to access my CD drive I get an error message stating that the location may have been moved. Last night, when using a SD card reader it shows up as a D: drive, which should be the defaul CD drive. Any suggestions how I correct this so that I can get the drive working? There is power supplied and the cables are correctly connected so I cant figure out what else to look for. I read somewhere about editing a registry and having bios detect it? I am a novice, help!

Does it show up in Device Manager?

If yes to the above but no to Windows Explorer, then use Alex Nichol's fix

If you upgraded to XP from Windows9x systems, you did use the Upgrade Wizard
first didn't you? If you have a version of Roxio EZCD Creator on your hard
drive that is earlier than v5, it's NOT compatible with XP. Even v5 needs
updates from www.roxio.com before it will work with XP.

When your computer boots up, does it show a logo such as Dell or HP? If
yes, click the escape key (esc). Now there should be something that says
something like press F1 (or it could be DEL, or F2, or even F5) to enter
setup. Press whatever key that is and look for your CD Drive in there.
Don't change any settings, but look where the disk drives are.

Also, try this once in Windows. Right click on My Computer and click
Manage. Now click on Disk Management. Do you see a CD ROM drive there?
If you do, what does it say and when you right click it, are you able to
change the drive letter? You should be able to change it back to D, but
you may need to change the Card Reader to something else before you
change the CD ROM back to D ;)
