Anyone advise on this one..

...on the family Windows XP machine at boot up we get ...

Windows can't find c:\scanner\am.exe ...........click ok, then get message
.....

Desktop - could not load c:\scanner\am.exe specified in registry..make sure
the file exists or remove it from your registry...
click ok and Windows opens ok

Scanner software was removed some months ago and no reference to am.exe
exists in the registry according to regedit...or on hard discs.

Any thoughts on how to stop this each time we boot up?...Thanks. J

See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Startup Programs Tracker. It generates an easily readable list of what's loading/attempting to load at startup. The included Help gives basic info on how to remove unwanted items.

Excellent...did that...
..... found the offending am.exe via msconfig..unticked it...but now each
time I boot up, although, its not looking for am.exe, I'm presented with:-

System Configuration Utility
You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way
Windows starts

The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic Start-up Mode,
causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time
Windows starts.

Chose the Normal Start-up mode on the General tab to start Windows normally
and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility

<BOX> Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility
when Windows starts

Any ideas what I do now?
Thanks. J

Look at the box more carefully. In the lower left-hand corner is a box you
can check that basically says "don't bother me about this again". Check the
box.

Thanks, yes, have unticked the offending file in Sys Config Startup, and set
to run in Selective Startup mode
and have ticked the box to not remind me each time I bootup as you have
suggested...so this does the job...not entirely satisfactorily I feel...I
really wanted to delete any reference to the damned file and then have
Config run in Normal Start up Mode...but...
Been looking for a good registry software that may help...found some that
look ok but being a bit stingy still looking for free prog...if can't find
same may invest in one.
Regards,
J

1. It is no big deal to run in Selective Startup. "Normal" doesn't mean good
and "Selective Startup" is bad. It just means you...selected things.

2. It is easy to remove the references to unwanted programs in the registry.
See this information on MVP Kelly Theriot's site for exact instructions:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_msconfig.htm

3. Registry Cleaners are dangerous. If you can't clean out your registry by
yourself because you know what you're doing, stay out of there! The XP
registry doesn't become bloated and make your computer slow like it did in
Win9x/ME. If you want more than my opinion, go to Google Groups Advanced
Search and search for "registry cleaners" in
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general.

OK, Thanks for the advice.
Cheers,

This next is off topic...sorry...but you seem so knowledgeable - grovel mode
:-)...do you have a comment on...
Recently seem to be having probs with the newsgroup servers I'm using viz
news.svr.pol.co.uk
and sometimes nntp.aioe.org...what's happening is many of my newsgroup
messages aren't showing for some reason
for example my text above on which you have commented hasn't appeared.
Clearly you have seen it and replied to it...but, after posting the message
I haven't viewed it ...bit disconcerting...also some replies to messages
I've submitted are all over the place - just in date order as apposed to all
together below my post (because my post isn't showing at this end)...am
wondering if some replies are going astray also.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. J

There's no way for me to know what is wrong with your news servers, but for
the MS newsgroups you can use their servers directly. The server is
msnews.microsoft.com with no username/password required.

OK Thanks Malke. J
