Hello everyone,

First of all, Ive read all the links that are mentioned all over this
newsgroup about networking in XP. Still I have a problem, cant figure
out wht exactly the problem is caused by. Here goes:

I am on a network, about 50 systems are on this network. All sharing a
broadband connection. The network administrator has required as to
install Microsoft Firewall Client on all the systems. My system is XP
Pro with 192.168.0.28 IP. This network is absolutely working fine.

I have two LAN cards in my system. One I use to connect to the above
mentioned network. The other to my brother's computer. My bro's pc is
Win98SE with no firewall, etc. a simple system. The problem is that
communication is very bad between my and bro's computer. If I try to
access his shares, my machine goes into a looooong sleep and then it
shows the results in the exporer. Sometimes it even gives an error
"Network path not found".

On the other hand, if my bro tries to access my shares... his explorer
opens it in a flash! This means something is causing blockage on my
side. Any idea what can be the problem ?

I asked this sometime ago and someone told me to have static IPs
between me and my bro's system ( i previously had no static ips ). So
i set my lan card's ip (which i use to connect to my bro) to
172.168.0.28 and on my bro's machine i set his ip as 172.168.0.20.
Still no difference.

Any other idea whats causing the problem ?

PS. I even tried disabling the firewall, no difference!

first of all, you should not enable ICF on the LAN connection. second, can
you ping each other by ip? what do you get if using net view \\broip
command?

ICF ? is that Internet Connection Firewall? If so, i need that to be
on.. because its the only source that can help in obtaining IP
addresses. Im a VB programmer, and in all my net applications I need
to obtain IP address of remote hosts. firewall client helps in
obtaining IP address. IP cant be obtained if this is turned off.. even
my net wont work if this is turned off. (Because all the network users
have not set User Proxy in the internet explorer options).

second, yes we can ping.. but on both sides when we ping, it takes a
small pause (about 0.5 seconds) after i type PING VICKY (or PING
172.168.0.20) and then proceeds the ping. It doesnt happen if i ping
any other computer on my first network; the ping command starts off
quickly.

Please help me out, this is very annoying and causing a lot of
disturbance.

The ICF and the ISA Firewall Client are completly different. Disabling the
ICF as in the advanced tab of the network connection should not affect
getting an IP address.

There are two things in my connection's advanced. Internet Connection
Firewall and Internet Connection Sharing. Both are unchecked. What
else ? :s
