I have a XP-home with all the updates and service packs, I started Saturday,
you can open the explorer and try of expand the folder and it just won’t up
the folder, but if you goto my documents folder and double click, it will
show the files.

I tried XP-SP2 and it didn’t help, I tried restore and that didn’t work
either.

Any Ideas

Hello Melvin,

First, thanks to Larry for the help on this issue. It is highly
appreciated.

Melvin, I am glad to know you have resolved this problem via following
Larry's suggestion.

I have performed researches on this issue. This issue only occurs when the
computer has been applied KB908531. Currently, our product group is aware
of this issue and is working on it. Hopefully, this issue will be resolved
soon.

Current resolution is to uninstall the update and implement the
Mitigations/Workarounds detailed in the MS06-015 bulletin.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/ms06-015.mspx

For your information, I would like to provide some related information
about this issue.

After installing the MS06-015 (KB908531) shell update, users are reporting
the following issues:

- Unable to access special folders like "My Documents" or "My Pictures"
- Office products may "freeze" when attempting to go to: File|Save and try
to save office docs to a specific folder like "My Documents"
- Office documents in the "My Documents" folder are not able to open in
Office.

Other reported issues:

- Opening a file through an application's File / Open menu hangs the
application
- Typing an address into IE's address bar has no effect
- Right-clicking on a file and selecting Send To has no effect
Clicking on the plus sign beside a folder in Windows Explorer has no effect

I hope the information helps.

Regards,

Ada Pan

Dear Melvin,

Just a follow-up for this issue, this issue has been fixed and Microsoft
has published the following article on Microsoft Web site.

918165 Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install
security update MS06-015
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165

You can also try the method provided in the article above to resolve this
issue. For your convenience, I copied the steps below:

RESOLUTION
===========================
o Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software. The MS06-015 (908531)
(http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx) security
update includes a "white list"; VERCLSID.EXE will not scan any extension
that appears on this list. Adding the HP shell extension corrects the
problem. Manually edit the registry:1. Log on to the computer with an
account with administrator privileges.
2. Click the Start button and then click Run.
3. Type Regedit and then click OK.
4. Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell
Extensions\Cached
5. Right-click "Cached", point to New, click "DWORD Value", and then enter:

{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9}
{000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} 0x401

6. Set the Data of this value to 1.
7. Close the Registry Editor.
8. Use Task Manager to end the Verclsid.exe process or restart the
computer.

Note: If other third-party COM controls or shell extensions are determined
to cause this issue, the same method must be used to add the appropriate
shell extension.

o VERCLSID.EXE process flagged by Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall. Kerio
Personal Firewall Users can configure Kerio to allow VERCLSID.EXE to
execute without prompting.

me know. I am glad to be of assistance.

Enjoy your day!
