I opened a Word 2002 document (.doc) that was created by a co-worker who has passed away. We don't think she would have used passwords, etc. The file is not protected. WHen I click anywhere on the text, I get a box around the whole file as if it were a text box, but it is not. In the botton left corner it says, "double click to edit' but nothing happens. THe version toolbar is on and it says "final version".

Can anyone think of anything that will help. THere are several large documents in the same condition that we need to make changes on. PLEASE HELP ASAP

You get that effect if there is one document embedded within another. Press
Alt-F9 to display field codes. See if you have a LINK field. If so, you
should be able to double-click the link to activate the embedded document,
then use SaveAs to save it as a new document that should be editable in the
normal way.
