Can't download files from IE6

When I try to download files from IE6 running on W2K,
I get the download dialog box that shows files flying across the screen
but the thermometer display doesn't move to the right and the
file never finishes downloading. In some cases I can hit refresh
repeatedly and eventually get the file downloaded. PDF's have
a similar behavior. They won't display unless I keep hitting
refresh. I already tried deleting temp internet files, history, and
index.dat. Any suggestions.

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303401

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.

(You may also have an invalid plugin for .pdf)

Thanks, but I already tried that, and I didn't have that key
in the first place.

Do you have the \Extension key?
If so, what is in it?

It has a subfolder named ".asp" which has four items
having to do with Acrobat/pdf files.
