Can't download ANYTHING through IE...

Every time I try to download anything, the File Download
window pops up (the one with the "Getting File
Information" text and the progress bar), then an error
message appears a minute later: "Internet Explorer cannot
download [program name] from [website]. Internet Explorer
was not able to open this Internet site. ...unavailable
or cannot be found."

This has happened every since I ran Spybot and CWShredder.
What's the deal?

Me too till I went to the update page and it had 5

critical updates,loaded them and it started to work again.
(Took several times before it loaded,kept doing the same
thing over and over.)
 
....I should mention that I've been through Regedit and
deleted the "Extension" folder under "Plugins" for
Internet Explorer. I read about that fix on a couple of
other websites, but it had no effect on my ability to
download through IE.

Also, I have installed all of the latest critical updates
for Windows.
