Can't dowmload with IE 6-can't force reinstall?

Hi,

I installed a trial of Flashget but decided to remove it. Now when I try to
download anything, I get a blank window with that tiny square,
red-white-blue icon with the circle, square and triangle inside. I have
seen this icon before in place of an image that wouldn't download.

I tried forcing a reinstall by editing the registry as found in the
instructions at Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378 (I
also tried sfc without results...) but after the ie6setup file downloads the
components and attempts to install them, I get an error message that says
(paraphrased) 'the program trying to be installed hasn't passsed the windows
logo and won't be installed' ...

Did I download the wrong version? I downloaded the 32 bit Windows version
of IE6 (in Opera of course) for XP and I am running WinXP Pro SP1? Don't
tell me I am running a 64 bit version and didn't know! I guess you don't
know what you don't know...

If that isn't it, does anyone know of somehow resetting IE6 so I can
download like with a registry tweak?

I really don't want to try to reinstall XP from a restore CD or restore the
whole system with the restore CD - I have put in hours and hours installing
programs and configuring everything just so.

I may deserve that option as it seems apparent I took the tweaking just too
far. I probably have a restore point but I am hesitant to use that, not
having any experience with that.

If Flashget had just uninstalled correctly, I don't think I would be in this
predicament! Other than that, mea cupa, mea cupa, mea maxima cupa! I
suppose I could reinstall Flashget but my experience hasn't been a good one
so far. I use Opera 7 as a backup, so I am not completely stuck but I
prefer IE6 and would like to fix it..

Thanks,

Sleepless

Anything or just .exe files?

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303401

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.

Here is the verbatim error message when trying to reinstall IE6 after the
regedit:

"The software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to
verify its compatibility with Windows XP. (Tell me why this testing is
important)

This software will not be installed. Contact your system administrator."

I have tried several more times without success...

Kelly has a fix for this in her A-Z area (there's also a download in
the tweak area)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm

From the A-Z under Internet Explorer, how to reinstall or repair:

If you received this error message: The software you are installing
has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with
Windows XP. This software will not be installed. Contact your system
administrator.

Rename the CatRoot2 folder (Windows\System32\CatRoot2) and then run
(right click/install) the ie.inf (Windows\inf\ie.inf).

Thank you Maureen,

I had found and used Kelly's 'ieinstall.reg'(line 114) but not the
'run_ie_reinstall.vbs' - the former I believe is the same as the manual edit
I did that I got at Microsoft.

So let me get this straight - before I run either or both of Kelly's tweaks,
you want me to '>Rename the CatRoot2 folder (Windows\System32\CatRoot2) and
then run
(right click/install) the ie.inf (Windows\inf\ie.inf).

I understand all but the rename part, - what do I rename it as? - will
anything do? What is your suggestion?

And, should this finally work, should I rename the folder back to it's
original name so the path is the way it was -say for future searches? or
is this unimportant?

Thanks so much...
