Cant do ANYTHING - XP Home

Removed some spyware and rebooted and now can't do anything on the system. It boots to the XP logon screen, but there are no users to click on to log on. Ctrl-Alt-Del does not work, holding the shift key down to bring up the users does not work

I cannot boot into any of the safe mode options, in fact nothing in the F8 menu works...they all bring me back to the blank XP logon screen

I have an OEM disc, so I can't boot to CD to reinstall (even with a BIOS boot order switch). Is my only option to reinstall with disks? I'd hate to loose everything just because my user profile seems to have disappeared

Any suggestions would be appreciated, as the computer is unusable
Thank
Jenna

Hi Jenna

Rather than a format and reinstall - perform a parallel install. This will
allow you to preserve your data and could allow you to further troubleshoot
our original install. You may need to get a retail setup disk.

For steps on how to perform a parallel install, read the 'Installing to a
new folder' section in the following KB Article:

Another option to preserve your data is to get a second hard drive. remove
the first and put the new one in. Perform the OEM setup on the new disk.
After it's all installed, add the original disk as a second disk - probably
on the Secondary IDE channel. If that works, it will show up as the E:
drive or something and you might be able to gain access to all your
original data on that drive. Of course these options may require some
added cost - it boils down to how much the data is worth.
