Hi,
I have been wondering why my computer can't detect other computers in my
office.
My computer was bought from DELL. And I have put in the correct workgroup
name and computer name. The network tree we have been using was placed at
the root, with the computer nodes at the root folder. My computer was set
behind a firewall. Tried authention whatever, tried disable firewall, DHCP
is working, I have a dynamic address everytime I start. The connection has
no problem to the internet. So what elses can I set?
Thanks
Jack

Tried different configurations such as choosing others in creating a new
connection, then said I had no network... but the same results
Thanks

Have you tried running the New Network wizard on all machines?

What? :) Never heard of it. My system is winxp pro sp2
Thanks

Start-My Network Places-New Network Wizard or Start-Connect to-Show all
connections-New network Wizard

That will automatically configure your network for you.

We have a standalone DHCP server running Windows 2000 Server. Would this be
a problem?
I don't have access to this machine...
Thanks

Sorry, didn't notice the "office" bit of your post. You should probably
speak to your office IT support in that case as there may be very good
reasons why you can't see other workstations. If you are using W2K server
then it's highly unusual to be able to see other workstations on the
network - all file sharing is done through shared drives on the server in my
experience. Can the other workstations see each other?

Not 'highly unusual'.

"browsing" for other computers (via Network Neighborhood) on the network
WILL be handicapped if you have NetBIOS turned off, which is often the
case since that's a "security tweak" that many people perform. Try
turning netBios back on. Also, the Browser Service should be running.

The "standard response" when people have dificulties getting a workgroup
up and running is to run the Network Setup Wizzard (on all the machines).
It will ensure that all necessary services and settings are correct. Try
that.
