There is something badly wrong with your installation,
perhaps caused by a past virus infection. You can try
this to walk around the problem:

1. Click Start / Run
2. Type cmd {OK}
3. Type these commands:
net user "xxx" /del
net user "yyy" /del

Use the appropriate account names instead of xxx and yyy.

I can't seem to be able to delete the account via the conrol panel way. if I
use your way what does it do with the files? Under the normal way i have
anoption to keep or delete the files (which i want to keep.)

thanks

Try this link. The earlier one not working.

Are you logged on as Administrator when you do it?

The commands I gave you will delete the accounts only.
The profile folders will stay intact.

"Delete user (keep OR delete files)"

I tried this and the message I got was "xxx (the name I entered) is not
recognized as an internal or external command."
In your reply, you said that the installation was damaged possibly because
of a virus. My computer also locks up whenever I run a virus scan with
Mcafee. Can I restore to the original "undamaged" condition with my recovery
disk? and if so, does it erase all files and programs that are presently on
the computer? Do you think it's worth the trouble?

I love it when posters say "this command did not work",
without saying exactly what they entered! The command
I gave you looked like this:

net user "xxx" /del and you probably shortened it to
netuser "xxx" /del for reasons unknown to me.

I do not trust machines that have been affected by a virus
infection, unless it was caught before it could spread. See
if running sfc.exe will fix it; if not, reload it.

Read carefully what he wrote.

Who knows what he typed.

Exactly! He probably removed both "net" and "user".

I really appreciate the advice and I know that you are more knowledgeable
than I, but.....the "tone" that I am hearing sounds very condescending. Thank
you for the tips.

Go for the knowledge and ignore the tone then. Either that or have fun
with it, too.

Now, are you gonna show us exactly what you typed or not? Want help?
Then play along.

No, I don't need to show you because I tried to delete the normal way again
and this time it worked. What I did differently this time is, instead of
booting it out of the freeze up I just walked away from the computer and came
back at a later time, I'm not sure how much later and it actually completed
the task. I am still having trouble with the computer freezing up when I run
a virus scan. I took the previous advice and ran the scan under safe mode and
it froze up again. I left it scanning all night and in the morning it was
still froze up. I finally had to hold down the button to turn it off because
ctrl/alt/del would not end the program. Tell me what your thoughts are in,
layman's terms please.

Ok, fine :)

It can take quite a while to delete an account and all the files and
registry entries for it, especially if the account was heavily used and
had a lot of files associated with it. I've seen it take over 10 minutes
in a few cases.

Ok.

1. Check for malware. Do a search for Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and
Destroy. Install, update and scan in Safe Mode.

2. Test your RAM: www.memtest.org

3. Do a disk check...
Start, Run, type in:

chkdsk /f

Hit Enter, answer Y and restart. Don't touch a key until after the 2nd
restart.

Post back with results please.
