have just installed Outlook 2002 (Office XP professional)
and transferred over my pst etc files from XP home
edition, and now I can't delete, move etc any emails from
my inbox - message says 'unknown error' and to restart
outlook, but this doesn't work.

Empty the Deleted Items folder and try again.

can't empty the deleted items, or delete from any other
folders for that matter. Any other suggestions?
Should I try the inbox repair tool?

Yes, you can do that. Also try yo delete by using SHIFT+DELETE

thanks - yes I can use S+D to get rid of them
permanently. My XP home config files were corrupt, which
is why I took the opportunity to upgrade, and we have
changed the default locations of the outlook files in the
new operating system to point to the old ones. So I think
it might be something to do with the paths as I have a
set of archived outlook folders and I can delete from
those, but not from the new ones. Thanks for your
suggestions so far. Much appreciated.

You're welcome! :-)

Now that you have used SHIFT+DELETE and you are able to clear the Deleted
Items folder does the normal deletion from other folders work again? You
might need to rerun scanpst.exe in between.
