Can't delete in Excel

I have tried to delete old documents in Excel. Everytime I do so - it
automatically saves a copy of what I deleted. I have tried to delete them
while on Excel and also through the "my documents" from the start button.
Can anyone help?

The documents are embedded inside Excel? Which version and on which
Windows platform?

How are you attempting to delete the documents while they are open in Excel?
 
The documents are saved in Excel - I use Windows XP - but I don't know how to
tell which version of Excel I am using. I tried to delete them while Excel
was open and then while it was closed too. - Thanks for responding.

In excel go to Help-About

(That's generally where you can see the version in ANY program.......)

Mmm. I suspect you don't mean that. The documents are of Excel TYPE,
saved from the Excel APPLICATION but are not *IN* EXCEL. You can put
documents INTO an Excel spreadsheet.

There isn't a file delete command with Excel so I'm not sure how you're
attempting to do this....

It would also help if you didn't mix top-posts with bottom-replies to
your post.
 
You are right Mike - they are saved in a spreadsheet.
Using Excel 2002
How I was trying to delete is: Go to "File" and "Open" - then left click on
the document I wanted and right click to delete.
When I went to the "Start" button I clicked on "My documents" and then left
clicked on the doc and clicked on "delete" from the "file & folder tasks".
Sorry this sounds so confusing. I am a novice.

Are you highlighting more then one document using the Ctrk key if so release
it befor trying to delete
