There is a file on my system that refuses to be deleted.
I just get a message saying "can't find file". When I
right-click I don't get any "Properties" option,
just "open" and a couple of other things I can't quite
remember.

What's the deal here? How do I get rid of it? Would it
be a corrupted file, and how do I fix it? I can't find
any Disk Scan or suchlike utility under Accessories like
there used to be under Win ME. Why is that? From looking
at the MS help pages, the closest thing is running chkdsk
(from MS-DOS prompt?). Why isn't there a utility
available from the Start Menu for checking disk? Surely
it's quite important???

Thanks for any help!!

A good starting point to have your problem solved
would be to quote the exact name & location of
the problem file.

You can check your disk via "My Computer" or via
"Explorer". Try right-clicking your disk, then have
a look at what's there, especially under "Properties".

OK. Here's a little more history. I can't be 100% sure I
have remembered the sequence correctly, but it went
something like this.

The file was originally in the folder "Documents and
Settings\default\". I don't like having all my user data
in a "default" directory (I have posted in another group
on that issue), so I tried creating a new folder "Mike
Bloggs" under Documents and Settings\ and moved everything
from "default" into there. Somehow I think there ended up
being two folders named "Mike Bloggs" (I think I tried
renaming "default" as "Mike Bloggs", but that didn't seem
to work, then I created my own Mike Bloggs directory as
above, and then somehow there were suddenly two of them).

I then realised it was all getting a bit messy, so I
renamed my "Mike Bloggs" directory as something else to
differentiate, then copied everything back to the old
default (Mike Bloggs) directory, except this one file that
wouldn't be moved or deleted (I don't know it's name off
hand, but I don't think that's important). I can move the
directory the file is in without any problems (it's now on
my desktop named "To Delete") to remind me to sort it out.

What is that "default" directory anyway? If you fancy
helping out on that question, please see my post
in "Windows XP, Customizing Your Computer".

Thanks!

Mike
