can't delete file

I was copying the files that I wanted to burn to a CD.
During this copying phase, my computer locked up (no
response to kb or mouse, an occurance that occurs quite
often during the day, not just related to copying files).
After rebooting, I found a file called: ¼¼ (yes, that's
one-fourth, one-fourth), in the "C:\Documents and
Settings\Glen\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD
Burning\zwx\include\wx" directory. I cannot delete this
file (or create any more CDs).
I get a dialog box saying, "Cannot delete file: Cannot
read from the source file or disk". If I try to purge the
file by creating a CD, I eventually get an error message
telling me I can't create the CD (I'm sure it's trying to
copy this non-existant file) and gives me the option to
remove all the temporary files. Of course, it can't delete
that one either, and fails during this process, so I'm
totally stuck! Can't delete it, can't burn CDs.
I've gone into a DOS box and tried to delete it that way
as well. I used System Restore to go back to yesterday,
all with no success.

Thanks,
Glen

Files with weird names like that normally mean a corrupt file system.
Run chkdsk with the "f" parameter, if you still have problems use the "r" parameter, will take longer
Running Chkdsk to Repair File Systems

Start > Run
type eventvwr.msc
Hit OK
View the system log, is there any errors or warnings from the source "disk", may be a sign that your hard drive is on its way to hardware heaven.
Check the harddrive manufacturers web site for tools that analyse the drives health.

Not sure whether or not the following is an acceptable workaround
in your situation, or even if it would work. But maybe changing
the Windows XP CD Recording temporary files storage location to
an alternate drive is something you want to consider researching
to see if it could solve your problem. For some information see
the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

KB308572 - How to Move the Temporary Files Location for Windows
XP CD Recording
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?Product=winxp&scid=kb;en-us;308572

BTW, I am in a similar situation with a file on a NTFS file
system partition in the C:\System Volume Information\_restore
folder. It has an inverted question mark and is named:
A000¿390.ini

I have turned off System Restore and rebooted. I have run
chkdsk /r numerous times since the file was created. I have
tried every command that have ever come across in the newsgroups,
in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, and on the Web (both booted in
Normal Mode and to the Recovery Console). And I have tried all
the suggestions in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base
article, including using rm.exe to try and remove the file. No
success. Oh well. At least the rm.exe thinks there is "No
such file or directory"...
