Mail servers don't connect to your pc.
Your PC does the work and the server responds.

Install WLM on your PC then set up the email account...
Tools > Accounts > etc.
with server details that Bigpond supplied you in their documentation
or on their website support pages.

Like Julian says.
You don't need any ISP software.
POP mail uses a universal protocol that is not ISP-specific.

THANK YOU!!!!! Who Hoo.................. That most recent KBxxxxxxx update
WORKS!!!! without turning off Norton.

You will need to use that KB fix many times as long as Norton is on your system. On top of that be prepared for other surprising surprises with Norton. They will eventually come and greet you.

Download and install this fix, with Windows Mail not running:

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether to use the 32-bit version or
the 64-bit version, try the 32-bit version first. Certain common
antivirus programs, such as most of those from Norton or McAfee,
or a recent one from Trend, tend to cause such problems, although
seldom immediately, so if you have such a program, remember
where to find the fix - you are likely to need it again.
